Rev. Virgil Wood initially protests the presence of the School Committeewoman at a graduation ceremony, asking the crowd of several hundred, “If this were a synagogue, would you have invited Adolf Hitler?”” Many in the crowd then chant “Go home, Mrs. Hicks.” An alternate “Freedom Graduation Ceremony” with Bill Russell as commencement speaker is held at St. Hugh’s Church on June 22, 1966. The Campbell School is renamed for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968.
